The Pilates Experience at PCC
It all started with Joseph Pilates...
Those who follow Classical Pilates aim to teach the method that tightly aligns with Joseph Pilates’ original work. Although he taught decades ago, we still have photos, film clips, and his direct students to reference.
His most influential protégé—Romana Kryzanowska, the student he chose to carry on his legacy—remained remarkably faithful to his approach. In 1998, she created the first formal Teacher Manual, giving future generations written documentation of the method. Some exercises generally considered “Classical” were actually Romana’s adaptations or creations, and are recognized as such. Most current Classical Teacher Trainers are either Romana’s students or students of her students (first- or second-generation).
There are also key distinctions in the apparatus. Classical equipment preserves the dimensions and mechanics Joseph Pilates used. Contemporary equipment, however, is typically larger, more adjustable, and more customizable—featuring additional springs, varied bar angles, multiple gears, more eye hooks, and other modifications. A Classical reformer remains relatively fixed: four equal-tension springs, a simple footbar adjustment, three to four gears, and minimal moving parts.
But We Don’t Just Teach Classical Pilates…
What is The Franklin Method in Pilates?
The Franklin method is a science-based practice developed by Eric Franklin that creates an effective interplay between body and mind for improvement in movement function, posture, and overall health.
The method uses dynamic neurocognitive imagery, anatomical embodiment, proprioceptive stimulation, and movement practice to heighten awareness and create necessary change.
Here at Providence Pilates, Katie McNamara is trained in the The Franklin method.
